🏗️ Build More Than Buildings
How Construction and Trades Businesses Can Thrive in a Changing Industry

The construction industry’s been coasting on muscle memory for too long. From outdated practices to old-school leadership styles, and minimal focus on the customer, what’s worked in the past decades won’t cut it anymore. The tide’s turning. There’s a new class of builders rising up who are done playing small. They're not just swinging hammers. They’re building businesses that lead, adapt, and grow. If you don’t become one, you’re going to lose to one.
The Vision: Stop Building Blind. Start Leading Bold.
The mission? Flip the narrative. No more “rough around the edges” stereotypes. We’ve got to change the mindset of an entire industry to move away from the negative stereotypes that have plagued us over the years. It's not just about building buildings; it's about building better businesses and a better reputation for the entire industry.
My Story: From Submarines to Saws to Strategy
You want non-traditional? Try this: I went from Navy nuclear submarines to getting a top-tier fancy MBA to burning out in corporate management consulting. Then pretty quickly got chewed up by the tech startup world. Eventually, came back to my roots - construction. My family’s trade. As a now third-generation owner, launched my own GC shop, got dirty, learned hard lessons. Then joined my dad’s business for a stretch. It didn’t stick, but it taught me what matters: leadership, ownership, and systems.
Now I coach construction business owners full-time. Because too many of us are stuck in the weeds, doing everything ourselves, and praying it doesn’t all fall apart when we step away. No matter how skilled you are in your craft, many owners in construction and the trades never learned the business skills needed to truly succeed. So, I help you to stop spinning your wheels and build a business that actually works, for you, your team, your clients, and your life.
What Makes a Construction Leader? It Ain’t Just Grit
Construction leaders don’t just build things. They build people. They take pride in their team. They create companies where people actually want to show up and really give a damn. That culture? It doesn’t happen by accident. You’ve got to build it.
We’ve got a people problem in this industry. For decades, everyone’s been sold the college degree as the American Dream, and told blue-collar work isn’t good enough. That’s garbage. Construction Leaders have to push back. Show your pride. There CAN be profit and purpose in building stuff with your hands, and in leading a crew that does it well.
Without Construction Leaders, we would have no infrastructure, no college campuses for those fancy degrees, no office buildings or homes. You see my point? I’m talking about the unsung heroes of our society.
The Next Big Threat: Consolidation
Here’s what’s coming, whether we like it or not: consolidation. Big national players are already sniffing around HVAC, roofing, and other home services. And when they move in, they move fast.
If you don’t have a plan, you’re going to get swallowed up, or wiped out.
Here’s How You Compete (and Win)
You don’t need 10 more trucks. You can’t afford to compete with the huge players on price or scale, so don’t try. What you need are tighter systems, stronger leadership, and customer service that actually blows people away. Here’s the playbook:
Out-serve the giants – They’ve got size. You’ve got soul. Make your customer feel it every time.
Build loyalty like glue – Be the go-to. The name they trust.
Stand for something – Your brand isn’t a logo. It’s your reputation. It’s the feeling people get when they think of you. Make it count.
Be obsessed with your customer – Not just satisfied. Obsessed.
Customer Service Isn’t Old-School, It’s Your Edge
Somewhere along the way, we got distracted as an industry. Too focused on the metrics, the bids, the margin, and ultimately the chaos. We forgot the basics: Serve the hell out of your customer. It’s the only reason you exist.
I’m not talking about fluff, use this as fuel. You want better margins? More repeat clients? Less churn? Then serve better. Period.
Systems Are for Serving, Not Slowing You Down
I’m all about management systems, but only if they support the mission. If your backend is a mess, your customers feel it. If your marketing, ops, and admin aren’t all perfectly aligned around excellently serving your ideal customer, you’re building a machine that’s leaking at every seam.
You In?
The game is changing. And you’ve got a choice to make. You can ride it out and hope for the best… or you can lead the charge and build something real.
Something you’re proud to put your name on.
You don’t have to do it alone.
Let’s build it together.
I work with owners who want to step out of the chaos and lead like real CEOs. Shoot me a note if you’re ready - [email protected]
Because you weren’t built to be stuck. You were built to build something that lasts.
